Larry Sultan & Mike Mandel, curators | Untitled from “Evidence Revisited”

In 1977, photographers Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to curate "Evidence," a traveling exhibition and book of 89 photographs from the files of government archives, corporate offices, research laboratories, and law enforcement agencies. Removing all explanatory text from the photographs, Sultan and Mandel's "poetic exploration [of] the restructuring of imagery" wittily suggested both failed art projects and bizarre, geeky rituals. "Evidence Revisited," a new book and exhibition, at Vassar College's Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center through December 19, contains the original 89 images, with 111 added prints and historical documents on postwar photography.
