Nightlife Highlights 11-03
by DJ Wavy Davy
THIRD FLOOR CONSORTIUM
NOVEMBER 6. These fun-loving acid-funksters love to share the groove with
fans and other players. For their return to the Oasis Cafe, they’re
joined on stage by smooth vibraphonist Jimi Leopard and Jim “Greens”
Collard on guitar. TFC has built a solid repertoire with jazzy new originals
by Leopard, keyboardist Michael Townsend, and drummer Prince William Sounds,
not to mention their samba cover of Ellington’s “In a Sentimental
Mood.” The new layout at Oasis adds nicely to the flavor.10PM. $4.
New Paltz. (845) 255-2400.

KING CRIMSON/LIVING COLOUR
NOVEMBER 14. Groundbreaking art-rock monarchs King Crimson are far from
dinosaurs, only playing “when there is work to be done,” says
founding guitarist Robert Fripp. He’ll be joined at UPAC by Adrian
Belew (guitar, lead vocals), Trey Gunn (touch guitar), and Pat Mastelotto
(drums), yet the announcement did not mention bassist (and Woodstocker)
Tony Levin, so stay tuned. In a dynamic double-header, the re-united Living
Colour will open. These hard-rockers, led by razor-sharp guitarist Vernon
Reid, put on a show your eardrums won’t soon forget. 8pm. $46, $42,
$40 (balcony). Kingston. (845) 339-6088.

STEVE GORN, GLEN VELEZ, AND LORI COTLER IN CONCERT
NOVEMBER 14. The mesmerizing bansuri flute music of Gorn is as ethereal
as the wind and ancient as Sanskrit. “World beat” doesn’t
describe this ensemble with outstanding frame drummer Velez and jazz vocalist
Cotler. Their original songs are uplifting and torchy at the same time,
especially when Cotler vocalizes. Thank Buddha for traditional musicians
with skills enough to come out of the pose at times. 8PM. $25. Woodstock.
(845) 679-2079.

NAIL
NOVEMBER 15. Neil Alexander’s NAIL is the only combo around fusing
electronica, jazz, funk, and jam-rock in time-bending trips through the
decades. Alexander, keyboardist for Pink Floyd tribute band The Machine,
loves to show off his vintage synths and keyboards, and he reports some
new “jungle-jazz” material for this show at the very hot Corner
Stage. Joining Alexander will be Rick Donato (drums), Josef Pellatier
(basses), Marshall Woodall (guitar), and even a turntablist is sometimes
in the mix. New music for all ages. 9PM. $6. Middletown. (845) 342-4804.

SOUL BRAINS/MURPHY’S LAW
NOVEMBER 16. The story goes that when Bad Brains signed to Maverick Records
(sans H.R.), the band sold the original name to Madonna, and were forced
to reunite as Soul Brains. The good news is that all original members
are back, including H.R., Dr. Know, Darryl Jennifer, and Earl Hudson.
The unbelievable power has not faded, based on a recent “preview”
show at the start of the tour. If that weren’t enough rage for ya,
hardcore legends Murphy’s Law join the Brains for an ass-kicking
double bill. Doors open at 6PM. $15. Poughkeepsie. (845) 471-1966.

JOHNNY ASIA FEATURING GUS MANCINI
NOVEMBER 29. Two more cosmic musicians would be hard to find in this galaxy,
so the fringe of Ulster County doesn’t seem so far. The Evergreen,
off Route 28 near Belleayre ski center, must have a direct connection
to the jazz universe, as many way cool acts have recently appeared. “Guitarist
from the Future” Asia sets a break-neck groove while Mancini’s
digi-sax soars to the sun. The show, billed as “Music for the Highly
Evolved,” adds spoken word by Theodore Finkle and John Holt. (Mancini’s
Hawk Project plays their annual show at Manhattan’s Cathedral of
St. John the Divine the previous Saturday, November 22.) 8PM. Fleischmanns.
(845) 254-5392.
