Nightlife Highlights 10-03
by DJ Wavy Davy
Chris Corsano/Paul Flaherty/Thurston Moore dream/action
unit
October 14. This free-jazz-noise trio wakes up Kingston as part of Ione’s
8th annual Dream Festival at Deep Listening Space. The dream/action unit
has forayed upstate with Paul Flaherty on alto/tenor sax, his New England-based
collaborator Chris Corsano on drums, and Sonic Youth’s Thurston
Moore on guitar. The sound is best summed up by Dave Morris in the online
zine Dusted: “Once the guitar starts cutting and weaving its way
through the silence, …throwing open the cages and letting everybody
out—the other instruments do not sneak in as much as jump out from
behind trees.” Sweet dreams! 8pm. $10. Kingston. (845) 338-5984.

Blues 2000 and 3
October 10-12. This annual event has grown well beyond its Hudson Valley
roots, attracting national headliners and blues fans from all over. This
year’s crowd pleaser will be John Priner from Chicago featuring
Hubert Sumlin, legendary guitarist for Howlin’ Wolf. Other winners
include local faves Big Joe Fitz and the Jeremy Baum Trio. Weekend packages
at the vintage Nevele resort include blues bbq, Sunday brunch, and much
more. 6pm. $30 day passes (Sunday $15). Ellenville. (845) 985-9407.

Mat Flinner Quartet/Kat Mills
October 10. Flinner is widely considered one of the hottest mandolin players
on the acoustic scene, both with his own band and as a member of Phillips,
Grier & Flinner. His long-awaited sophomore release Latitude (Compass
Records) evokes the sonic textures of acoustic jazz while paying homage
to his many influences in bluegrass, folk, and Celtic music. But don’t
be late for this Towne Crier double-bill, or you’ll miss the wonderfully
talented Kat Mills, a hard-touring singer and talented songwriter performing
from her solo debut Long Time (Sweetcut Records). 9pm. $17.50/$15. Pawling.
(845) 855-1300.

Gov’t Mule
October 11. Who knew that Allman’s guitarist Warren Haynes could
not only step into shoes filled by Duane Allman and Dickie Betts, but
have enough left over for a kick-ass trio of his own. Gov’t Mule
returns to upac with help from WDST 100.1fm, the first station to break
the news that Andy Hess was hired to replace founding bassist, the late
Allen Woody. Two years of auditions produced an album (Rising Low from
the Deep End Vol. 1) and a film (Rising Low) from 2002’s Woodstock
Film Festival, produced by Mule drummer Matt Abts. For a double-dip, Chris
Robinson’s (Black Crowes) band New Earth Mud will open. $30. 8pm.
Kingston. (845) 339-6088.

HooDoo Man Farewell Concert
October 17. New Orleans brought Jesse Moore “The Hoo Doo Man”
to our valley, and now it’s taking him back. After burning up local
stages with rockin’ originals and Creole covers, Moore has given
in to the lure of the levee and flies south this winter to fulfill his
musical destiny. New World Home Cooking, a regular hdm haunt, presents
his final area appearance, so laissez les bon temps roulez! (But bookmark
Moore’s Web site for Crescent City correspondence.) 9pm. Free. Saugerties.
(845) 246-0900.

David Bromberg Band with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason
October 24. Click on his bio at davidbromberg.net and learn that in 1984
Bromberg had dissolved his touring band to graduate from violin-making
school. Now the multi-instrumentalist has a retail and repair shop in
Wilmington, Delaware, and tours from the heart, as on this recent series
with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. How did they convince the slightly reclusive
Bromberg to appear? By pulling some strings, of course. (The intimate
Egg also presents the Nashville Bluegrass Band October 4, and Pat Metheny
trio and solo October 9.) 8:15pm. $26. Albany. (518) 473-1845.
