Man With Cabbage Head
Laurent Elie Badessi, 1996
French-born Laurent Elie Badessi
belongs to a family
of three generations of photographers. Since the '90s,
Badessi has focused his fine art photography on capturing the magic and
subtleties of the human form. "I always put two extremes together
and try to show that the shape of the body, the texture of it, resembles
nature and that the two are connected," says Badessi.
A book of his fine art work, Skin,
that the cover image Man with cabbage head is taken from, was published
in 2000 by Edition Stemmle, with text by Sondra Gilman, founder and head
of the department of photography at the Whitney Museum. In an introduction
to Skin, Badessi writes: "Our fleshy envelope is so close to us,
yet at times we forget its resemblance to nature....My pictures do not
rely on post-production cut-and-paste tricks. I play on the ingenuity
of the camera angles and trust the skill of my models, who adapt their
bodily shapes to the context surrounding them."
Badessi's work appears regularly
in internationally recognized magazines such as Elle, Vogue, and Harper's
Bazaar. His work is part of several highly regarded photography collections
and he has exhibited extensively in Europe and the US. Badessi lives in
