Parting Shot

untitled from the “Nurse Midwife” series, W. Eugene Smith©, B&W print, 1951

An exhibition of photographs by W. Eugene Smith, “Selections from Photographic Essays,” on loan from the Smith Family Collection, will be exhibited through July 27at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on the SUNY New Paltz campus. Regarded as a master of the photographic essay, Smith (1918-1978) traveled the globe documenting people and events, including the Battle of Saipan during World War II, Albert Schweitzer in Africa, and a monumental, 10,000 photograph series on Pittsburgh that took Smith three years to complete.

The untitled image above, from the “Nurse Midwife” series, is the story of Maude Callen, a black woman working in an impoverished community in the rural South, whom Smith photographed for a Life magazine photo essay. Smith’s photos of Callen marked the first time a black woman was featured in a national magazine. For more information on the exhibition, call 257-3844.
